Funnyman can fix a dishwasher with Kool-Aid

February 21, 2009
Albuquerque Journal – By Eric Billingsley
Journal Staff Writer

The terms “funny” and “home improvement” are rarely used together, unless you're Joey Green, a celebrity speaker and author who will be at the ABQ Home & Lifestyle Expo today and Sunday.

Green, dubbed “America's Mad Scientist of Home Improvement,” will demonstrate home-improvement techniques such as: how to fix a broken dishwasher with Kool-Aid, clean driveway oil spills with Coca-Cola, remove wallpaper with Heinz white vinegar and unclog a drain with Jell-O.

“It's funny because some of these uses are so offbeat and outlandish,” Green said in a telephone interview. “But a lot of it is really practical and makes doing household chores more amusing.”

The ABQ Home & Lifestyle Expo is one of several events coming to New Mexico in the next few months designed to give consumers home-improvement advice and resources.

Green, who just released the book “Joey Green's Fix-it Magic,” has persuaded Jay Leno to shave with Jif peanut butter, Barbara Walters to put a wet Pampers diaper on her head and Rosie O'Donnell to mousse her hair with Jell-O.

The 45-minute performances are scheduled at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. today and 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Green said each show will be different and will cover dozens of strange fix-it ideas. “A lot of it is stuff that grandma told you, but you said, 'What do you know?' ”

The ABQ Home & Lifestyle Expo, held each spring and fall at the Manuel Lujan Jr. Exhibit Complex at EXPO New Mexico, attracts 15,000 to 20,000 attendees, boasts 300 booths and showcases various internationally recognized speakers.

“Joey Green is a riot, and I can't wait to get him here,” said Ken Lucas, president of Lucas Productions, the company that produces the shows each year. “We try and time our speakers with what's going on. Things are tough right now so we thought 'let's have some fun.' ”

The show will include remodelers, plumbers, electricians, countertop companies, a pet section, health and wellness products and companies, furniture, pools, spas, sunrooms, and environmentally friendly companies and products. There will also be live demonstrations and entertainment.

“This show has anything and everything a person would look for to make their life more convenient,” said Lucas. “And if you need an electrician, you're there meeting the owner of the company. You get to establish who they are and what they're all about before they come into your home.”

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - New Mexicans looking for ideas to improve their homes and lifestyles set an attendance record at the 16th Albuquerque Home and Lifestyle Expo which included the International Green Show on October 25th and 26th.  Lucas Productions reported more than 17,000 people attended last weekend’s event in the Manual Lujan and Creative Arts Buildings at Expo New Mexico.  That is a 20 percent increase from the same Expo in 2007.

Due to the success of the Fall Expo nearly 75 percent of the exhibitors have already contracted to return to the Spring ABQ Home and Lifestyle Expo which will be held February 21 & 22, 2009.

For Immediate Release:

Albuquerque’s Largest Home Show Adds Lifestyle Segments
Boomers’ Focus has Shifted Toward Lifestyles

Albuquerque – January 2, 2008 – The Baby Boomers have dictated trends for over 50 years, and their impact has now expanded into the home show industry. Nationwide, home shows that have added lifestyle sections – vendors, samples, workshops – have seen increases and record attendances. That trend in home shows is now coming to Albuquerque.

According to Dulmae Bower, author of homebasedbusiness.com and baby boomer researcher, “It used to be about wealth - ‘get that bigger house’, buy the ‘nice car’ and the ‘toys for the boys’. Now it’s far more about lifestyle – it’s about time with the family, reducing the ‘pressure’, ‘flexibility’, moving to a more ‘relaxed environment’ and starting a business ‘because I want to. . .

To bring the focus to lifestyles, Lucas Productions purchased Albuquerque’s largest home show - the 16-year-old Albuquerque Home Remodeling and Furnishing show - from Interact Productions earlier this year. To more accurately reflect the flavor of the new show, its name has been changed to the Albuquerque Home and Lifestyle Show. Two shows will be held at Expo New Mexico in February and October.

With over 85 percent of the exhibit space already sold, the addition of lifestyles seems to be the right one.

“I’ve participated as a vendor in the show for years, and it needed to be upgraded,” explained Ken Lucas, President of Lucas Productions, which also owns Granite Transformations. “The changes we’re making seem to be resonating with vendors. We’ve had dozens of people who’ve chosen to come back to the show after being gone for several years. We’re very excited about the changes and the way Albuquerque is embracing what we’re doing.”

The Albuquerque Home and Lifestyle Show will have 250 home improvement and lifestyle exhibits. Exhibitor categories include: home remodeling and furnishings, landscaping, spas, fitness, recreation, leisure and travel. In addition, people can hear celebrity speakers including: The Healthy Housekeeper Laura Dellutri, America’s Master Handy Man Glenn Haege and The Wall Wizard Brian Santos.

As for the future of this event, Lucas has a multitude of plans. “We see this event as a significant marketing opportunity for local, regional and national home and lifestyle oriented companies that are seeking an opportunity to expand their business within the Albuquerque Metro market,” he said. This show is being modeled after similar events in larger cities such as Phoenix, Denver and Los Angeles. The plans on the drawing board include significantly increasing the size and scope of the show while utilizing a portion of the show proceeds to support the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the UNM Cancer Center.  For more information, go to www.abqhomeshow.com
